Who we are

Smiley Building Services is the trading name of Smiley Building & Construction Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 10693083), registered office 14 Crest Road, South Croydon, London CR2 7JQ. We are responsible for the personal information you give us, which makes us the “data controller” under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018).

We only collect what we need to quote for and carry out building work. We never sell your details or add you to marketing lists.

What we collect

When you get in touch

Whether you use the form on this website, phone, text or email us, we’ll have whatever you choose to give us. That usually means your name, phone number, email address, postcode or property address, a description of your project and any photos or drawings you send.

When we quote for or carry out work

The property address, access arrangements, measurements, notes and photos of the property, drawings and calculations, your quotation and contract, invoices and payment records, and correspondence about the job.

Planning, building control and party walls

If we submit a planning application, Lawful Development Certificate or building control application for you, or help with party wall notices, your name and address go to the council, the building control body or the surveyors as part of that process. Planning applications are published by the council.

Reviews and testimonials

We show testimonials on this website with a first name or title and the postcode area only. Reviews you leave on Google, MyBuilder, TrustATrader, Houzz or other sites are covered by those sites’ own privacy policies. Ask us and we’ll remove your testimonial from this website.

This website and cookies

This website uses Google Analytics to count visits and see how people use the site, such as which pages are popular and how visitors found us, so we can improve it. Google Analytics sets cookies (named _ga and _ga_…) that last up to two years. We use these cookies only to produce statistics about how the website is used, which UK law (the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, as amended by the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025) allows without asking for consent first, as long as we tell you and give you an easy way to opt out. Google’s advertising features, such as Google signals and ad personalisation, are switched off, and we don’t use any advertising trackers.

To opt out, click “Opt out” on the notice shown on your first visit, or use the “Cookie settings” link at the bottom of any page. We’ll stop Google Analytics, delete its cookies and remember your choice in your browser. It’s free and has no effect on how the website works.

Our web server keeps standard technical logs (such as IP address, browser type and pages requested) for security. To stop spam, the enquiry form briefly keeps a scrambled (hashed) version of your IP address for up to an hour.

How we use it, and our lawful basis

  • To reply to your enquiry, visit and quote. You’ve asked us to, so this is a step towards entering a contract with you.
  • To design, get approvals for and carry out the work, and invoice you. This is needed to perform our contract with you.
  • To keep business, tax and health and safety records. We have legal obligations to keep these.
  • To keep the website and form secure and free of spam. This is in our legitimate interests.
  • To understand how the website is used (Google Analytics). This is in our legitimate interests in improving the website. You can opt out at any time.
  • To show testimonials. With the customer’s agreement, which can be withdrawn at any time.

Who we share it with

  • the companies that provide our email, phones and website hosting
  • Google, which provides Google Analytics for us
  • architects, structural engineers, party wall surveyors, suppliers, scaffolders and licensed waste carriers working on your project, who only receive what they need
  • the council or building control body, for planning and building regulations applications
  • TrustMark or our trade associations, if you raise a complaint or claim through them
  • our insurers, if there’s a claim
  • our accountant, and HMRC or other authorities where the law requires it

Some providers may process data outside the UK. When they do, they use the safeguards UK law requires.

How long we keep it

  • Enquiries that don’t go ahead: up to 12 months, then deleted.
  • Customer and job records: at least six years after the end of the financial year the work was done in, as HMRC requires, and longer for structural records where they may be needed for future claims or a sale.
  • Website server logs: as set by our hosting provider, usually a few weeks.

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of your information, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it (unless we have to keep it, for example for tax records), restrict or object to how we use it, withdraw consent, and ask for your information in a format you can take elsewhere.

To use any of these rights, email info@smileybuildingservices.co.uk or call 07786 254637. There’s no charge, and we’ll reply within one month.

Complaints

If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your information, please talk to us first and we’ll put it right. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
