Extending is one of the best ways to get more from the house you already love. The trick is choosing the right type of extension for your property and how you live. Here are the options we build most often around Croydon.
Single-storey rear extension
The classic. Usually built to give a bigger kitchen-diner with doors onto the garden. On a 1930s semi in Shirley or Addiscombe, a three or four-metre rear extension can transform the ground floor.
Side-return extension
Victorian and Edwardian terraces in South Norwood, Thornton Heath and Selhurst often have a narrow alley down the side of the back addition. Filling it in widens the kitchen dramatically without losing much garden.
Wrap-around extension
A side return and rear extension combined into one L-shape. It's the biggest single-storey option and gives a very generous open-plan space.
Two-storey extension
If you need bedrooms as well as living space, building up as well as out is usually the best value per square metre, because the foundations and roof are shared between two floors. Have a look at our two-storey extension build from groundwork to finish.
Bringing in light
Whatever you build, plan the light. Rooflights, a lantern or a glazed section of roof stop the middle of a deep extension feeling gloomy. Bi-fold or sliding doors at the back open the room to the garden in summer.
Don't forget the loft
If you'd rather not lose any garden, a loft conversion can add a bedroom and bathroom without touching the ground floor.
