If you're giving your bathroom a facelift and can't decide what to change, look at the basin. Swapping a pedestal basin for a vanity unit is one of the simplest upgrades there is, and in a small bathroom it can make a surprising difference.
Why a vanity unit works
A vanity unit is simply a basin sitting on, or in, a cupboard. That one change gives you somewhere to put the toothpaste, the spare loo rolls and everything else that normally clutters the windowsill. It also hides the waste pipe and the water supplies, which tidies the whole room up.
Floor-standing or wall-hung?
A floor-standing unit gives the most storage and is easy to fit. A wall-hung unit leaves the floor clear underneath, which makes a small room look bigger and makes cleaning easier. Pair one with a large mirror or mirrored cabinet and even a tiny bathroom starts to feel more spacious.
Getting the fit right
- Measure carefully, including the door swing and the space in front of the toilet
- Check where the existing waste and supply pipes are
- Choose moisture-resistant materials; cheap chipboard swells if it gets wet
- For wall-hung units, make sure the wall can take the weight, or that proper fixings are planned in
Vanity units come in all sizes and finishes, and many can be made to measure for awkward spaces. If you're planning a new bathroom or en-suite in Croydon or Bromley, see our kitchens and bathrooms page or call for a free survey.
